Ian holds a LLB (Hons) degree in Law (University of Bristol).

He is senior partner of Bates NVH. He joined Bates Son and Braby (subsequently Bates and Partners) as a trainee in 1969, became a partner in 1973, and subsequently senior partner in 1993. In 2003 he formed the new practice of Bates NVH, which amalgamated the London and Leigh-on-Sea offices of Bates and Partners, with the Fleet, Hartley Wintney, and Hook offices of Nash Vann Hooker.

Ian specialises in contract law, particularly in the fields of construction, environmental and planning matters, intellectual property rights and private company.

Ian is a member of the Institute of Directors, and also a member of the Board of Trustees of Odiham Cottage Hospital, and of the Hazel Wood Charitable Trust.

Ian is an active rugby union referee (Berkshire Society of Referees), and is a supporter of a number of initiatives to bring music into the villages of North Hampshire, particularly with the practice's sponsorship of the Hart Young Musician of the Year Award, and the Angell Piano Trio.
